Route overview
A transfer from Georgetown to IAD Dulles covers about 25 miles and usually takes 35 to 65 minutes. The route uses M Street NW, the Whitehurst Freeway or Canal Road, I-66 west, and the Dulles Toll Road. Georgetown sits on the Potomac with limited highway access, so the first few miles are the slowest part of the trip. Dulles is northwest of the city in Loudoun County, and the route crosses the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge area in reverse. The Key Bridge and Whitehurst Freeway are the two main ways out of Georgetown, and both can jam at rush. Our dispatch team is a New York-based company that arranges Washington DC service through vetted local affiliate operators.
Roads and traffic
We typically take M Street to the Whitehurst Freeway, then connect to I-66 west via the Roosevelt Bridge or Rosslyn. I-66 westbound carries heavy outbound traffic from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Dulles Toll Road usually moves well until the airport approach. Morning departures between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. are generally easier than evening departures. Late-night and midday rides are the most predictable. Rain on the Whitehurst Freeway and Canal Road can slow the initial exit from Georgetown.
Pricing
Sedan transfers from Georgetown to IAD start at $160, and SUV transfers start at $195. Rates include tolls, gratuity, and curbside or door-to-door pickup. Additional stops, wait time, or late-night service may increase the fare. SUVs are recommended for extra luggage or groups of four.
When to add buffer
Add 30 to 45 minutes during weekday evening rush, thunderstorms, and major events at Capital One Arena that affect downtown exits. I-66 westbound in the afternoon is brutal, and M Street can back up for blocks. If your flight departs between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., leave earlier than the GPS suggests. Georgetown University events can also spill traffic onto Canal Road and M Street.
